Running for A Furry Cause (Pet Express Doggie Run 2016)

Every year in a mid-March summer's day, all the doggies come out to play. Actually, more of a 1.5K, 3K, or 5K fun run!

The annual Pet Express Doggie Run was held last weekend, and it was definitely a howling success! Now on its 6th year, around 1500 doggie runners turned up to run for PAWS (Philippine Animal Welfare Society), and raise money for the animal shelter.

The surprise guest was actor and dog lover, Gerald Anderson, who went straight from shooting to the starting line to represent the Gerald Anderson Foundation (GAF), a non-profit volunteer organization founded by him and his family, that trains pets to be K9 dogs for search & rescue missions. He was accompanied by his brother, Ken, who also ran with their dog, Koda.

Also sighted at the run were seldom-seen dog breeds like a sharpei, great dane, and a border collie, to name a few. (Sorry, no photos though.)

Aside from an over abundance of doggie rundorphins, all Doggie Run finishers earned doggie medals and doggie lootbags for a job well done. Their humans were also given treats. A first time for this canine-centric fun run! haha.

Look who dropped by for the 5K run? Well, there's Gerald Anderson,
representing the Gerald Anderson Foundation...
And there's Jason, the Hush Puppies basset hound mascot! ;)
(betchadidn't know that's his real name!)

It's Fergus the Aspin's first run too!

Run, Ruff & Roll Over, Rover! @ Doggie Run 2013

{Pet Express Doggie Run 2013}
This little pet project is getting bigger and bigger year after year! Doggie Run 2011 had an impressive turn out with 500 canine runners. Last year, it got bigger and better (the finisher doggie medal was awesome!) with 800 dogs. Now on it's 3rd run, we're looking at a whopping 1000 dogs. And it even leveled up with a timing chip! O, diba? Can you say feeling pro??? :) haha.

So, start training your four-legged running buddy and troop over to SM Mall of Asia on March 23, 2013 (Saturday). Newbie doggie runners need not fret, they can enjoy an easy 1.5K fun run. If you think your dog (and you) are fit enough, then level up and do the 3K run. And last but not the least, there's the 5K distance for elite doggie runners.

Just a friendly reminder though, let's all remember to always keep our doggie's disposition in mind. Are they dehydrated? Tired? Don't force 'em if they refuse to run. Remember, dogs can't talk (well, unless you're a dog whisperer like Cesar Millan). So, always be vigilant and check if they can still go on. If not, just leisurely stroll along the picturesque Manila Bay and make new doggie friends along the way. ;)

Hope more people support the Doggie Run this year. Aside from the timing chip, a new event-- Flyball, which is a dog team relay game, will be introduced in an exhibition game as well. Exciting!

More dogs/runners = More funds to raise for PAWS (The Philippine Animal Welfare Society)

P.S. Watch this video for some Doggie Run fun!

Capital F-U-N Runs

Long time readers of this blog have known me to be a sucker for novelty and themed races. The more out-of-the-box, the better. Not that I don't take running seriously, but there's just something about letting loose and just laughing and having fun all the way to that finish line. Now if you've been the more traditional runner, I suggest you give these upcoming fun runs a try...

Pet Express DOGGIE RUN 2012
Date: March 24, 2012 (Saturday)
Venue: SM Mall of Asia
Time: 5:30 A.M.
Distance: 1.5/3/5K
Beneficiary: PAWS (The Philippine Animal Welfare Society)

Why Run? When and where else can you run alongside four-legged canine runners? In this race, it's the dogs who are the rockstar runners, and you the entourage. Dog lovers would surely get a kick out of having matching race bibs with their dogs (the doggie race bibs can be personalized). Oh, and medals are in store for all those furry finishers too!

More details here.

If that's not fun enough for you, then maybe winning a limited edition Fox DVD set might get you off that couch. Read: DVD MARATHON.

For the certified movie buffs, the 3K Star Movies Blockbuster Run is for you. Movie trivia and quotes will keep you entertained all throughout the route. And if you happen to forget which movie a certain trivia comes from, let your fellow runners help jog your memory- you'll be running alongside fellow minds- writers, film producers, and movie directors. Then again, you can always brush up on your daily dose of movies IF you win the home entertainment system in the raffle draw, that is.

If fashion and fitness is more your style, then join the 5K Star World Lifestyle Run. This is your chance to hobnob with models and celebrities. But what's more fun is getting your 15 minutes of fame (or at least feeling like a celebrity) as you strut your stuff in your running shoes on the red carpet. Did I mention a shopping spree will be raffled off? How fun!

We Walk, Weave, Run, Rock Manila (Nike We Run Manila 10K 2011)

Rock Manila
It's no secret that a race by Nike is bound to be one heck of an event filled with out of the box surprises and limited edition collectibles. That's probably why this year, 8,000 runners were jam-packed and tucked away at the far end of Fort Bonifacio Global City on a Saturday afternoon, that lasted til the wee hours of the evening to rock 'n roll with three of the country's biggest bands.

I, for one, was excited for this for a number of reasons:
1) Haven't joined a race for a while- I missed running...
2) Big sis duties. Supporting my brother's (technically) last event in Manila before he flies off to a new life adventure. (Sniff.)
3) Awesome, awesome running shirt (Yes, that actually came 3rd).
4) Running groupie. (Congrats to my 10K newbie troops!)
5) Rockin' groupie. (hahaha. Just kidding.)
6) Nike groupie. ;)

Red Means Go!
It's expected that we'd be walking past the starting line, but what I didn't expect was that I'd still be walking until around the 4th kilometer. Yikes! Anyone who had been there can attest to the sheer number of people packed into narrow streets. In retrospect, I should've weaved through the dense crowd at the onset of the race, maybe then I could've shaved off a bigger chunk from my time...

I can't say it was a good fast run for me. I've been in hiatus for quite a while, and my body was really reminding me of that. Nevertheless, the feel of hitting the pavement in my running shoes still felt great! I'm slowly getting back into the groove. I can't wait to break those PRs once again. Soon.

Good job, Team Nike!

Good Run: Shake Yo' Booty-Tail (Good Housekeeping Family Fun Run 2011)

After all those meetings, and everything about running and dogs and running and dogs (yep, that's no typo error) for the Pet Express Doggie Run, MY RUNS and MY DOGS ironically took a backseat. You can just imagine how envious I was seeing all the other dog lovers running with their four-legged running buddies. But of course, all that "seeing green" just took a nanosecond before it was quickly replaced with excitement, happiness, and overwhelming gratitude at the successful outcome of the run.

So when another run opened its doors to the canine kind, you can bet that I'd be there, dragging my running buddy and its furry behind ASAP!

The Good Housekeeping Family Fun Run 2011 (pets included!) was held at the Manila Ocean Park last April 3. I decided to bring our golden retriever, Phoebe, to run with this time. (My dachshund, Imp, ran a 3K in last year's dog run while BFF Phoebe cheered him on. Imp ran with my sister. I was working as one of the organizers. So, yeah, green with envy! ;P)

RACE DAY- Phoebe and I piled into the car and set off to Luneta Park. And, in true Phoebe form, as soon as the car doors opened, out she rushed excitedly wagging her booty-tail as we ran from one end of Luneta to the Grandstand. Apparently, pacing was NOT an option.

Phoebe was already all pooped out (Really. We had to make a "quick stop"...) before the 1K Pet Run, that when the actual race started, we had to take it slow and took a few walking breaks in between that looooooong stretch. But who cares? We ran, we finished, we had a whole lotta fun! It's always a blast running with (wo)man's best friend. Always.

{It's Phoebe's first official race. Woo-hoo!}

Dogs Runneth Over (Pet Express Doggie Run 2011)

{Dogs (and dog owners) of all kinds and sizes, all revved up to run!}

Last March 26, 2011, dog of all breeds and sizes flocked over (or should I say pack?) to the SMX/Mall of Asia grounds to compete in the biggest dog running event in the counry- the Pet Express Doggie Run 2011.

As early as 4:30 AM, runners and their two-legged running buddies were already milling around the game booths scoring freebies and having their snapshots taken. A very nonchalant noo-nee-noo-nee-noo move while secretly sniffing out their competition- literally.

Around 500 canines were present for the 1.5/3/5K races, bringing along their own sets of equally excited human runners and cheerleaders. There wasn't a tail that wasn't wagging happily from the time the gunstart went off, to the time those furry feet crossed the finish line. Truly a day to remember for pets and pet lovers who participated.

It was overwhelmingly awesome- and that was just me sitting on the sidelines. ;)
